A Brief History of Compassion in the Philippines
- In 1972, Compassion reached the Philippines. It worked directly with three local denominations:
The Assemblies of God, Church of God, and the Southern Baptist Churches of the Philippines.
- In the early 1980s Compassion partnered with the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC),
then under the leadership of Atty. Agustin “Jun” Vencer, and began to minister
to more churches were empowered to reach thousands of Filipino families for Christ.
- In 1987, Compassion International in the Philippines became an independent entity,
under the directorship of Rev. Joel Villamor.
- In 1994, Compassion’s Family Helper Program shifted to the Learning for Life Program,
which proved to be neared to the heart of God’s Great Commission.
- Ms. Menchit Wong served as the second Country Director from 1998 to 2003.
- In 1996, Compassion’s Leadership Development Program (LDP) began in the Philippines.
- In 2002, the Philippines registered its 20,000th child.
- On June 24, 2006, the first local Alumni Association of Compassion International
was launched in the Philippines. It was launched with Dr. Wess Stafford.
- The 50,000th child was registered in April 2009.
